Chief Pharmacist (HPC/PHS 3)


Location: St. Thomas Health Department

The Chief Pharmacist will be in charge of the department and will report directly to the S.M.O. The pharmacy will be responsible to the Medical Staff through the Drug and Therapeutic Committee. 

As department manager, the Chief Pharmacist assumes professional responsibility for the development, supervision and coordination of Pharmaceutical activities.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited institution with a Diploma/Bachelors Degree in Pharmacy
  • Registration with the Pharmacy Council of Jamaica after completion of Diploma/Bachelors Degree in Pharmacy

 

Responsibilities

  • Prepare annual estimates of drugs and medical supplies for the effective running of the institution
  • Monitors inventory management procedures and makes spot checks to minimize errors and identify flaws in the system.
  • Ensures the availability of drugs and medical supplies in the institution by coordinating inventory management activities, budgetary allocation and liasing with suppliers.
  • Advises physicians and other health care personnel on the availability of drugs and medical supplies.
  • Coordinates with the Chief Executive Officer and the Senior Medical Officer (or any of the consultants) with regards to the acquisition of NON-VEN list items for the critically ill patients.
  • Work in conjuntion with hospital CEO to establish goals and objectives for the pharmacy that are in harmony with the overall goals of the Hospital.
  • Supervises activities of levels 1, 2, 3 and sessional/part time pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy interns, pharmacy students and support staff.
  • Provide training for pharmacy students and pharmacy technicians as Pharmacy Preceptor.
  • Liaises with Director of Pharmaceutical Services, Director of Standard and regulations Director of Pharmacy Council on Technical and personnel matters.
  • Monitors activities relating to the compounding and dispensing of medications with emphasis on identifying drug interactions, antibiotic usage, special order drugs and communicating with prescriber for qualification or amendment.
  • Ensures that activities within the department conform to Quality Assurance Standards
  • Chairs the Drug and Therapeutic Committee of the hospital.
  • Schedule personnel to handle workload.
  • Assist in the recruitment of Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians for the provision of extended working hours for the pharmacy.
  • Appraise the performance of personnel under supervision and discuss problems with them.
  • Implements research methodology to improve the standard of pharmaceutical services.
